An analysis of the absorption spectrum of praseodymium chloride

1957 Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A Mathematical and Physical Sciences 81 citations

Abstract

The terms and levels of the configuration ƒ 2 , corresponding to Pr 3+ , are examined. It is shown that it is essential to allow for the breakdown of Russell─Saunders coupling when calculations of the crystal splittings of several excited levels are made. Evidence is given for identifying the level lying immediately above 3 F 3 as 3 F 4 . The crystal splittings of 3 H 4 , 1 G 4 , 3 F 3 , 3 P 2 and 3 P 1 in PrCI 3 are satisfactorily accounted for, and the reasons for the deviations between experiment and theory in the case of 1 D 2 are discussed.
