Abstract

Increased industry participation in university-based biomedical\nresearch has created greater opportunities for conflict of interest when any\nof the parties may benefit financially from the outcome of particular\nresearch. Presently there are no widely accepted conflict of interest\nguidelines for investigators conducting research, especially clinical trials,\ninvolving products with commercial value. The guidelines discussed here were\ndeveloped voluntarily and agreed to unanimously by investigators in the Post\nCoronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery Clinical Trial, a multicenter National\nInstitutes of Health-sponsored study involving pharmaceuticals manufactured by\nthree major American corporations.
