Abstract
Expanding Flatland Since its discovery and isolation some 5 years ago, research on graphene has exploded. The sheets of carbon atoms, just one atom thick, exhibit a vast array of properties—mechanical, optical, and electrical—that make it an ideal test bed to probe fundamental problems in physics, as well as lending itself to a wide portfolio of applications. Geim (p. 1530 ), the discoverer of this remarkable material, reviews recent advances and discusses what other developments may be in store for this material.

Tailoring graphite with the goal of achieving single sheets
We demonstrate the tailoring of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) to obtain uniformly sized islands of up to several microns in size. There has already been some researc...
High-yield production of graphene by liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite
Fully exploiting the properties of graphene will require a method for the mass production of this remarkable material. Two main routes are possible: large-scale growth or large-...
Single Sheet Functionalized Graphene by Oxidation and Thermal Expansion of Graphite
A detailed analysis of the thermal expansion mechanism of graphite oxide to produce functionalized graphene sheets is provided. Exfoliation takes place when the decomposition ra...
Functionalized Single Graphene Sheets Derived from Splitting Graphite Oxide
A process is described to produce single sheets of functionalized graphene through thermal exfoliation of graphite oxide. The process yields a wrinkled sheet structure resulting...
First Direct Observation of a Nearly Ideal Graphene Band Structure
Angle-resolved photoemission and x-ray diffraction experiments show that multilayer epitaxial graphene grown on the SiC(0001) surface is a new form of carbon that is composed of...
