Abstract

The concept of user interface responsiveness is distinguished from that of performance. It is argued that performance limitations are inevitable and that performance need not limit responsiveness. Four techniques for improving responsiveness despite limited and/or fluctuating processing resources are presented. These are adaptive resource allocation; parallel problem solution; work-ahead, that is, precomputing solutions; X3 and nonsequential input processing.
