Abstract Stability criteria are derived for circular particle orbits in the equatorial plane of a stationary, axisymmetric space-time in general relativity. They are applied to show that the orbits of the particles making up an infinitesimally thin disk are stable as long as the angular momentum per unit mass of the particles increases monotonically outward from the axis of symmetry.
