Abstract

Measurements of heat transport through horizontal layers of fluid heated from below are reported for three aspect ratios $\ensuremath{\Gamma} (\ensuremath{\Gamma}=\frac{D}{2d}, D=\mathrm{diameter}, d=\mathrm{height}\mathrm{of}\mathrm{the}\mathrm{cylindrical}\mathrm{cells})$.They show that for $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=57$ the fluid flow is turbulent, in the sense that it has an a nonperiodic time dependence, for numbers $R>{R}_{t}$ with ${R}_{t}\ensuremath{\cong}{R}_{c} ({R}_{c})$ is the critical $R$ for onset of fluid flow). For $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=4.72$, we find ${R}_{t}\ensuremath{\cong}2{R}_{c}$. For $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=2.08$, a quasiperiodic state exists for ${R}_{p}<~R<~{R}_{t}$, with ${R}_{p}\ensuremath{\cong}10{R}_{c}$ and ${R}_{t}\ensuremath{\cong}11{R}_{c}$.
